Asserting that the ruling TVK has no intention to politicise the sensitive Cauvery river water dispute, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay told the State Assembly that his proposal for Chief Minister-level talks in Bengaluru was aimed at securing positive outcomes from Karnataka through dialogue.
Responding to a Special Calling Attention motion raised by leaders of various parties, including the DMK and AIADMK, Vijay addressed concerns raised by Leader of the Opposition Udhayanidhi Stalin over the government’s reluctance to convene an all-party meeting.
He cited historical precedents, including discussions from 1969, suggesting that negotiations involving both states and the Centre could help resolve the issue.
“Why not we give it a try? I proposed the talks with the hope of finding an amicable solution,” Vijay said, adding that even hostile nations resolve disputes through dialogue and that Tamil Nadu, as a neighbouring state, should pursue the same approach.
On criticism that the state might face embarrassment during such talks, Vijay said he was ready to face any humiliation for the sake of the people of Tamil Nadu, stressing that securing water for farmers was more important than political considerations.
He said that the Cauvery issue is both a lifeline and an emotional matter for Tamil Nadu and assured the House that the government would never compromise on the state’s rights. He noted that a unanimous resolution passed in the Assembly had been sent to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, along with a letter seeking action over remarks made in the Rajya Sabha regarding the Mekedatu project.
Vijay added that Tamil Nadu would continue to pursue all legal options to safeguard its share of Cauvery water, while keeping the door open for dialogue. The issue dominated proceedings in the Assembly, with strong arguments from both treasury and opposition benches.
In his reply, Water Resources Minister S. M. Anand detailed the steps taken by the government and reiterated its firm commitment to protecting Tamil Nadu’s interests in the ongoing Cauvery dispute.
The minister said the government remains committed to protecting the interests of delta farmers and ensuring Tamil Nadu receives its rightful share of water. He said that any move affecting the state’s allocation would be firmly opposed.
Anand also stated that the government is closely monitoring developments related to the Mekedatu project and will take necessary legal and administrative steps to safeguard Tamil Nadu’s position.
