At least 111 people were killed and 87 injured after a powerful 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck western Colombia on Monday, causing widespread destruction, collapsing buildings and leaving several people trapped under rubble. The government declared a national emergency as rescue and relief operations were intensified across the affected areas.
The earthquake struck with its epicentre about 5 km east of San José del Palmar in the Chocó department, according to the US Geological Survey. The tremor occurred at a depth of approximately 107 km, sending powerful shockwaves through large parts of the country.
Authorities reported extensive damage to buildings and infrastructure in several regions. More than 1,600 buildings were damaged, while at least 61 structures collapsed completely, raising fears that the death toll could increase as rescue teams reach areas that remain inaccessible.
Emergency crews were deployed to search through collapsed structures for survivors. Several people were reported trapped beneath the rubble, prompting authorities to mobilise rescue personnel, medical teams and heavy equipment to the worst-affected locations.
The earthquake caused casualties and damage in Pereira, Cali, Chocó and other parts of Colombia. In several communities, residents were forced to leave their homes amid concerns over further structural collapses and continuing aftershocks.
The depth of the earthquake meant that its effects were felt over a wide area. Strong tremors were reported across Colombia, while neighbouring Ecuador and Panama also experienced the shaking.
The national emergency declaration is expected to facilitate the mobilisation of additional resources for rescue, medical assistance and relief operations. Authorities are also assessing damage to roads, public buildings, homes and other critical infrastructure.
With rescue operations still underway, emergency officials have warned that the situation remains fluid. Teams are continuing to search damaged buildings and isolated areas for people who may be trapped, while hospitals and emergency services are treating those injured in the disaster.
The earthquake has left communities across western Colombia facing a major humanitarian and infrastructure challenge. Officials have urged residents to remain cautious, avoid entering damaged buildings and follow instructions from emergency authorities as assessment and rescue operations continue.
