New Delhi, Aug 12:
Cricketer Abishek Porel, who represented Delhi Capitals in the IPL, was arrested by police following a complaint by a medical student alleging sexual assault on the basis of a promise of marriage.
The woman, a medical student from Karnataka, lodged a complaint at Mokra police station on June 23, alleging that she and Porel had been in a relationship for around three-and-a-half years. She claimed that the two had planned to marry and had also travelled abroad together, but that Porel later denied being in a relationship with her.
The complainant reportedly approached the Calcutta High Court, alleging that police had failed to take immediate action on her complaint.
Following the court’s direction in July to arrest Porel, police took him into custody on Monday and registered a case under five sections.
The arrest has caused a stir in cricket circles, given Porel’s association with Delhi Capitals in the latest IPL season.
