Guinea, Aug 24:
At least 30 people were killed after a massive landfill collapsed in Guinea’s capital Conakry following heavy rain, burying nearby shanties under tonnes of waste.
Officials said the disaster struck around 2 am at the Dar Es Salam landfill, the city’s largest open-air dumping site, after heavy rainfall triggered a landslide of garbage.
Search and rescue operations were under way to locate survivors. Six people suffered serious injuries, while several houses were damaged in the collapse.
Authorities said residents living around the landfill had earlier been asked to vacate the area, and several families had already moved out. However, many people were still present when the disaster struck.
The government said efforts would be made to relocate the remaining families, while the landfill was reportedly scheduled to be closed on Sunday.
