Mumbai, Aug. 24:
Two people were killed and five others, including two children, were injured after a huge Ganesh idol fell during its arrival ceremony in south Mumbai, civic officials said.
The incident occurred around 10 pm on Saturday on Balaram Merchant Road near Kabutarkhana at Jay Ambe Chowk in Bhuleshwar, officials said.
The idol, known as ‘Bhuleshwaracha Raja’, was being taken towards Bhuleshwar when it fell during the procession.
Several people were injured in the incident and were immediately rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment. Two of the injured later succumbed to their injuries.
Following the accident, fire brigade personnel, police teams, ambulances and civic ward staff were mobilised at the spot.
The incident has cast a shadow over the festive preparations in Mumbai, with authorities expected to examine the circumstances that led to the idol falling during the arrival ceremony.
