Colombo, Aug. 24:
The United Nations has welcomed Sri Lanka’s efforts to facilitate the return of refugees from India, describing the initiative as an important step towards creating conditions for voluntary and dignified repatriation.
The development follows efforts by Sri Lankan authorities to assist nationals who left the country during years of conflict and settled in India. The UN has stressed that any return process must be voluntary, safe and carried out with respect for the rights and dignity of the returning families.
Thousands of Sri Lankan refugees have lived in India for decades, particularly in Tamil Nadu, after fleeing the island nation during the civil war. Many families have established long-standing links with their host communities while retaining connections with relatives and property in Sri Lanka.
The UN has encouraged continued cooperation between Sri Lankan authorities, India and humanitarian agencies to ensure that returning refugees receive adequate assistance and access to essential services.
Successful reintegration will be crucial, particularly for families that have spent many years outside Sri Lanka. Housing, livelihoods, documentation, education and access to basic services remain important aspects of any sustainable return programme.
The UN’s support comes as Colombo seeks to advance reconciliation and address the long-term humanitarian consequences of the conflict.
