The decision to drop the Parandur airport project is a major policy shift, but it does not eliminate Chennai’s urgent need for a second airport. While the move addresses the concerns of farmers and residents who faced displacement, Tamil Nadu cannot afford to lose years in identifying an alternative. Expanding the existing Chennai airport may provide temporary relief, but the State’s growing economy, passenger traffic, cargo movement and industrial ambitions require long-term aviation infrastructure.

The real challenge for the Vijay government is to ensure that the cancellation becomes a course correction rather than a costly retreat. A new site must be identified quickly through transparent technical studies, with clear criteria covering connectivity, environmental impact, flood risk, agricultural land, rehabilitation and proximity to industrial corridors. The government must avoid repeating the delays and conflicts that marked Parandur while ensuring that affected communities are genuinely consulted.

Parandur should ultimately be judged not by the politics surrounding its cancellation but by what replaces it. If Tamil Nadu finds a technically superior site, builds public consensus and moves swiftly towards execution, the decision could strengthen the State’s development model. But if the search for an alternative drags on, the concerns raised by the Opposition about lost time and economic opportunities may prove justified. Tamil Nadu now needs not just a new airport site, but a clear and credible roadmap to deliver it.
