Chennai, Aug 26:
The Tamil Nadu government has stepped up efforts to rescue residents from the State who are stranded in Nepal following sudden flooding and bring them back home safely, officials said on Wednesday.
The State government is coordinating with the Union government and the Indian Embassy in Nepal to ascertain the whereabouts and safety of Tamil Nadu tourists affected by the situation. Necessary steps are being taken through diplomatic channels to facilitate their safe evacuation and return to Tamil Nadu.
According to officials, the government is maintaining continuous contact with tourism agencies and the concerned authorities to collect details of tourists from Tamil Nadu who had travelled to Nepal. Information regarding their location, travel groups and immediate requirements is being monitored closely.
Officials said the government is keeping a close watch on developments in Nepal and is prepared to extend all possible assistance to Tamil Nadu residents facing difficulties because of the sudden flooding.
The authorities have also urged relatives and family members of tourists travelling in Nepal to share relevant details with the concerned agencies so that the whereabouts of affected persons can be verified and assistance provided wherever required.
The Commissionerate of Rehabilitation and Welfare of Non-Resident Tamils has made its 24/7 helpline available to assist people seeking information or help regarding Tamils affected overseas.

The State government has assured that it is closely monitoring the situation in coordination with the Union government, the Indian diplomatic mission and tourism agencies, with the safety and early return of Tamil Nadu tourists being given priority.
