Chennai, Aug 26:
A 27-year-old woman died by suicide at her residence in Saligramam after allegedly receiving threats from an unidentified caller who claimed to possess obscene photographs and videos of her and threatened to send them to her husband, police said.
The woman, who lived with her husband in a rented house at Mathiazhagan Nagar in Saligramam, was found dead at their residence on Monday.
Police said preliminary inquiries revealed that she had received calls on Monday evening from two different mobile numbers. During the calls, an unidentified person allegedly claimed to have obscene video clips involving her and threatened to share them with her husband.
The alleged threats caused her severe emotional distress, according to the preliminary investigation.
Police have registered a case and are examining the mobile numbers used to contact the woman. Investigators are also working to identify the caller and determine whether the alleged photographs or videos actually existed or whether the threats were part of an extortion or harassment attempt.
Further investigation is under way.
