Chennai, Aug. 27:

In a major relief to students and families seeking higher education loans, the collateral-free loan limit has been raised to Rs 20 lakh, widening access to financial assistance for students pursuing professional and higher education.

The move is expected to particularly benefit students from middle-class and economically weaker families who often face difficulties in arranging property documents or other assets as security while applying for large education loans.

With the enhanced limit, eligible students can access higher amounts without being required to provide collateral, subject to the terms and eligibility norms prescribed by lending institutions and the relevant education loan framework.

Education loans have become increasingly important as the cost of higher education continues to rise, particularly for professional courses in engineering, medicine, technology, management and specialised fields.

The increase in the collateral-free ceiling is aimed at ensuring that the absence of family property or other financial assets does not become a barrier to higher education.

Students and parents have, however, been advised to carefully examine the terms of the loan, including interest rates, repayment schedules, moratorium periods and eligibility conditions before finalising applications.

Banks and financial institutions are also expected to assess the academic course, institution and future employability prospects while processing applications.

The enhanced ceiling is likely to provide greater flexibility to students aspiring to pursue higher education within India and, where applicable under the scheme, abroad.

Education experts said easier access to institutional credit could reduce dependence on high-interest private borrowing and help families manage the growing financial burden of higher education.
