Chennai, Aug. 27:
The Communist Party of India has urged the Karnataka government to fully implement the Cauvery water-sharing orders and respect the decisions of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal and the Supreme Court, stressing that Tamil Nadu’s farmers should not be denied their rightful share of water.
The party said the Cauvery dispute must be addressed strictly within the legal and institutional framework already established to regulate the sharing of water between the riparian States.
The demand comes amid renewed political concerns in Tamil Nadu over Karnataka’s proposed Mekedatu project and the long-standing issue of ensuring the timely release of Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu.
The CPI maintained that Karnataka must comply with the water-sharing mechanism and ensure releases in accordance with the orders governing the inter-State river dispute.
For Tamil Nadu, the Cauvery is critical to agriculture in the delta districts, where farmers depend on timely water releases for cultivation.
Political parties in the State have repeatedly argued that any delay or shortfall in the release of water can severely affect crop planning and agricultural livelihoods.
The CPI called upon the authorities to ensure that the existing Cauvery orders are implemented in letter and spirit and that disputes over water sharing are not allowed to undermine the interests of farmers.
The party’s intervention adds to the continuing political pressure on both the State and Union governments to protect Tamil Nadu’s rights over Cauvery water and ensure compliance with legally mandated sharing arrangements.
