Chennai, Aug. 27:
The Tamil Nadu government has appointed seven ministers to oversee development works and the implementation of welfare schemes across all 15 zones of the Greater Chennai Corporation, strengthening ministerial supervision of civic administration in the State capital.
The move is aimed at ensuring closer monitoring of infrastructure projects, public services and government welfare programmes across Chennai, which has witnessed rapid urban expansion and increasing pressure on civic infrastructure.
The ministers will coordinate with Corporation officials and other government departments to review the progress of development works and address issues affecting residents in their respective zones.
The initiative is expected to bring greater political and administrative oversight to key areas including roads, drainage, drinking water, sanitation, waste management and the implementation of welfare schemes.
With Chennai preparing for the northeast monsoon and facing persistent challenges linked to flooding and urban infrastructure, the zonal monitoring arrangement assumes added significance.
The ministers are expected to hold periodic reviews and coordinate with local bodies and departmental officials to ensure that projects are completed within stipulated timelines.
The government’s decision also seeks to improve accountability and provide a direct mechanism for monitoring public grievances and civic requirements at the zonal level.
Officials said the arrangement would help ensure that the State government maintains close oversight over Chennai’s development and that welfare benefits reach residents effectively across all parts of the city.
