Lima, Aug 31:
In Ecuador, former President Lenin Moreno has been sentenced to five years in prison after being convicted of accepting bribes from a Chinese company in connection with a hydroelectric project contract. Moreno, 73, was convicted as a direct participant in the scheme dating to his tenure as vice-president.
His wife, daughter, two brothers and brother-in-law were also convicted as accomplices, with the wife and daughter receiving 30-month sentences. Moreno will serve his sentence under house arrest because of his physical disability.
