Kathmandu, Aug 31:
Five-year-old Ishara Tamang, rescued from the devastating flash floods in Nepal’s Rasuwa district, has survived the disaster but remains separated from her family as thousands continue searching for missing relatives.
Ishara was rescued from floodwaters in Khalte after becoming trapped in a net. When she regained consciousness in a Kathmandu hospital, she told medical staff that her mother had been swept away by the flood. Her father was reportedly in Kathmandu, but her mother’s whereabouts remained unknown.
The August 26 floods, which surged through the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli river systems, have devastated large parts of northern and central Nepal. The death toll has crossed 700, while around 2,500 people remain missing. Families have been gathering at hospitals with photographs and details of missing relatives, hoping for news.
Rescue teams have continued searching through mud and debris despite intermittent rain and rising river levels. In another dramatic rescue at Timure, a six-year-old girl was pulled alive from beneath the wreckage of a collapsed security post after rescuers heard her cries. Survivors, meanwhile, are facing a second struggle to find shelter, food, medicines and missing family members.
