BENGALURU, Sep 2:
Karnataka Chief Minister D K Shivakumar on Tuesday said the government would reintroduce the Parks Bill in the Assembly to provide an opportunity for the Opposition to debate the controversial legislation.
The Karnataka Government Parks (Preservation) Bill, 2026, allows portions of park and garden land to be used for public infrastructure and utility projects. The legislation has faced opposition from citizen groups, resident welfare associations, walkers and political parties.
The Bill, which was passed by both Houses of the state legislature, seeks to amend the 1975 law governing prominent green spaces, including Bengaluru’s Cubbon Park and Lalbagh.
Shivakumar said he was open to suggestions from Opposition parties and the public, and that the government would take a decision in the larger interest of the people and the state.
He also said the government planned to develop four or five more parks in Bengaluru on the lines of Lalbagh botanical garden.
