NEW DELHI, Sep 2:

Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday criticised the Centre and Uttar Pradesh government over the alleged gang-rape of a 16-year-old girl on a moving sleeper bus between Greater Noida and Delhi.

Gandhi said the girl was allegedly raped for around 47 km while the bus travelled through the Delhi-NCR region, questioning how the vehicle crossed multiple roads and checkpoints without being stopped.

In a post on X, the Congress leader questioned the monitoring and checking of sleeper buses and asked why such measures had not been strengthened despite years of concern over crimes against women following the Nirbhaya case.

According to police, the teenager had boarded the sleeper bus in Greater Noida and was allegedly assaulted by the driver and conductor before being abandoned near Kashmere Gate in Old Delhi.

Gandhi questioned whether accountability would be fixed for the Delhi and Uttar Pradesh police and criticised the governments for what he described as failures to ensure women’s safety.

He asked how many more women and girls would have to suffer before the Centre and state governments addressed gaps in the system.
