Chennai, Sept 2:

The Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation (Tasmac) has launched a 24×7 helpline for consumers to lodge complaints about overcharging and other irregularities at its retail liquor outlets.

Consumers can call 1800-889-2015 or send complaints and queries through WhatsApp at 7397720230, with the services becoming operational from August 31.

Tasmac has also identified its official social media accounts on platforms including Facebook, X, Instagram and YouTube as channels through which consumers can submit grievances.

Officials said complaints received through these platforms would be forwarded to the concerned officials and monitored for appropriate action and resolution.

The initiative follows the government’s decision to increase the salaries of Tasmac employees. Prohibition and Excise Minister K. Vignesh had announced the salary hike in the Assembly, saying it was intended, among other things, to address complaints relating to collection of amounts above the maximum retail price.

The government has warned that Tasmac employees found repeatedly collecting excess amounts from customers will face strict disciplinary action.

According to the Minister, employees found guilty of such violations could face a three-month suspension, while repeat violations could result in dismissal.

Complaints of Tasmac salesmen charging customers more than the printed price have been a longstanding issue in Tamil Nadu.

While the government has sought to crack down on the practice, Tasmac employees and their unions have claimed that low salaries and expenses associated with maintaining shops and facilities have contributed to the problem.
