Chennai, Sept 3:
Chennai Customs officials seized 3.452 kg of high-grade hydroponic ganja worth an estimated ₹1.20 crore from a 62-year-old Malaysian passenger who arrived from Kuala Lumpur, and arrested him.
Acting on information about a possible drug smuggling attempt, officers of the Chennai Airport Customs Intelligence Unit stepped up surveillance on passengers arriving from abroad.
The Malaysian passenger allegedly attempted to leave the airport without stopping at the Customs area, raising suspicion among officials. He was intercepted and his suitcase was searched.
Four airtight packets concealed in the bottom of the suitcase were found to contain processed hydroponic ganja. The total weight of the seized contraband was 3.452 kg, officials said.
The Customs department seized the drugs and arrested the passenger. Investigators are probing whether he was acting as a courier for an international drug trafficking network and whom he was supposed to hand over the contraband to. Efforts are also underway to identify those who allegedly sent him to smuggle the drugs into Chennai.
