Chennai is getting into a festive and spiritual mood ahead of Krishna Jayanthi on Friday, with markets overflowing with flowers, colourful Krishna idols and decorative items, while temples, residential associations and spiritual organisations are preparing a host of special programmes to mark the birth of Lord Krishna.
Krishna Jayanthi, also known as Janmashtami, will be celebrated on September 4 this year. Devotees traditionally mark the occasion with prayers, fasting, devotional singing and midnight worship, commemorating the birth of Lord Krishna.
Across Chennai, the preparations have already brought a festive vibrancy to markets and neighbourhoods.
Flower markets in the city have witnessed increased activity, with devotees purchasing jasmine, rose, marigold and other flowers for decorating homes and puja rooms.
Shops selling Krishna idols have also been doing brisk business. Small idols depicting Balakrishna, or infant Krishna, are particularly sought after by families preparing special displays at home.
Colourful idols in different sizes, along with cradles, peacock-feather decorations, flutes and miniature Krishna-themed accessories, have been attracting shoppers.
Decorative items associated with the festival, including garlands, torans, lamps and Krishna-themed backdrops, have also found their way into shops across the city.
A shopkeeper in Mylapore said the demand for Krishna idols and decorations had picked up considerably over the past few days.
āPeople are looking for colourful Balakrishna idols and decorations for their puja rooms. Many families are also buying small cradles and traditional decorations to recreate the birth of Krishna at home,ā he said.
The festival has also provided a seasonal boost to sweet shops, home-based food businesses and caterers.
Traditional Krishna Jayanthi preparations such as seedai, murukku, sweet seedai, butter and other savouries are being prepared in large quantities as devotees get ready to offer them as naivedyam.
Sweet and savoury shops have been receiving advance orders from families and apartment communities.
Several caterers are offering specially packed Krishna Jayanthi hampers containing traditional sweets and snacks.
For many households, preparing seedai and murukku remains an integral part of the celebration.
āThere is a special emotional connection with Krishna Jayanthi food. Families may buy sweets from shops, but many still prefer to prepare at least one traditional item at home and offer it to Krishna,ā said a city-based caterer.
Traditional South Indian observances of Krishna Jayanthi include offerings such as butter, fruits and milk-based sweets, while seedai and other snacks are commonly associated with the festival.
Children are another major attraction of the celebrations.
Shops selling Krishna costumes for children have been witnessing brisk sales. Parents are purchasing colourful dhotis, crowns, peacock feathers, flutes and other accessories to dress their children as Krishna.
Some schools, residential communities and cultural organisations are also planning Krishna-themed programmes in which children will appear as Krishna and Radha.
The sight of young children dressed as Balakrishna has become one of the most popular features of the festival in Chennai.
āEvery year we dress our son as Krishna. The festival is not only about prayer for us; it is also a way of introducing children to our traditions,ā said a parent.
Major temples in the city are being decorated for the occasion, with special pujas, abhishekams, devotional music and other programmes planned for devotees.
The Parthasarathy Temple in Triplicane, one of Chennai’s prominent Vaishnavite temples, observes Krishna Jayanti as part of its annual festival calendar.
Temple authorities are making arrangements to accommodate devotees expected to turn up for special prayers.
Several temples are also planning special alankarams of Lord Krishna, followed by bhajans and devotional programmes.
The festival is also being celebrated beyond temples. Spiritual organisations and residential associations in several parts of Chennai have lined up bhajans, satsangs, devotional music programmes and Krishna-themed cultural events.
Apartment complexes are preparing community celebrations, with residents coming together for prayers, bhajans and distribution of prasadam.
For many neighbourhoods, the celebrations are turning into community events that bring together children, youngsters and senior citizens.
The devotional atmosphere is expected to intensify on Friday evening and continue into the night as devotees gather for special prayers marking Krishna’s birth.
Many Chennai households have begun cleaning and decorating their puja rooms.
Families traditionally draw tiny footprints from the entrance towards the prayer room, symbolising the arrival of infant Krishna into their homes. Devotional songs and readings from the Bhagavad Gita are also part of traditional observances in Tamil Nadu.
For several families, the festival is also an occasion to bring generations together.
Grandparents teach children traditional songs and rituals, while youngsters take part in decorating the house and preparing offerings.
With flowers filling markets, Krishna idols adorning shopfronts, sweet shops working overtime and temples preparing special programmes, Chennai is slowly acquiring the unmistakable colours and sounds of Krishna Jayanthi.
