Chennai, Sept 3:
The Tamil Nadu government will begin selling onions at Rs 35 per kg through urban ration shops from Thursday, offering relief to around 80 lakh urban ration card holders.
The government plans to procure 1,000 tonnes of onions through cooperative agencies. Retail onion prices have risen to around Rs 56–60 per kg due to higher transportation costs and reduced supplies from Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh.
The move is aimed at improving supply and checking the seasonal rise in onion prices.
