New Delhi,  Sept 5:

India and Japan are set to make cricket history on September 22 when their men’s teams meet for the first time in an international match, with the one-off T20I to be played at the Sano International Cricket Ground in Tochigi Prefecture, Japan.

The landmark fixture will be played as part of celebrations marking 75 years of diplomatic relations between India and Japan. The match will also launch “Sport 75”, an initiative aimed at strengthening sporting cooperation and promoting people-to-people exchanges between the two countries.

The encounter, to be played for the Suzuki Cup, represents a significant moment for Japanese cricket, which has been steadily seeking greater international exposure. For India, the match provides an opportunity to deepen sporting ties with Japan while taking cricket to a country where the sport remains relatively small compared with baseball and other established games.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) said the initiative is also aligned with India’s ambition to host the 2036 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Cricket’s inclusion in the Olympic programme from Los Angeles 2028 has given the sport an additional global push, making international cricketing engagements with emerging cricket nations increasingly significant.

The match is expected to attract attention beyond the cricket field as it combines sporting diplomacy with a major bilateral milestone. India and Japan have maintained close political, economic and strategic relations, and the cricket fixture is being positioned as a new avenue for strengthening those ties.

The Indian team will enter the contest as the stronger side, given its standing in world cricket and depth of international experience. Japan, however, will have the opportunity to use the occasion to showcase its growing cricketing infrastructure and provide its players with exposure against one of the sport’s leading nations.

The fixture is scheduled to begin at 9.30 am IST, according to match details released following the announcement.

With the two countries preparing to commemorate seven-and-a-half decades of diplomatic relations, the first India-Japan international cricket match is likely to be remembered as much for its symbolic value as for the result on the scoreboard.
