Chennai, Sept 7:
Chennai is set for further urban expansion with plans for six new satellite townships around the metropolitan region, aimed at easing pressure on the core city and promoting more balanced suburban development.
The proposed townships are part of the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority’s plans to encourage development beyond the existing urban limits.
The satellite-township model is expected to create new residential and commercial centres, improve infrastructure and reduce the concentration of population and economic activity in central Chennai.
The initiative could also have a significant impact on transportation and real estate development as new urban clusters emerge around the metropolitan region.
The proposed expansion comes against the backdrop of Chennai’s growing population, traffic congestion and increasing demand for housing. Developing planned townships outside the core city could help distribute future growth and reduce pressure on existing infrastructure.
The project is expected to involve coordinated development of roads, public transport, housing and civic infrastructure. However, detailed information on the individual locations and implementation timelines will depend on the plans and approvals of the CMDA and the State government.
The satellite-township proposal comes as Chennai continues to expand rapidly along its major transport corridors and suburban growth centres.
