Kyiv, Sept 7:
US special envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner held talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Kyiv on Sunday, a day after meeting Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow as Washington renewed efforts to broker an end to the Ukraine war.
The Kyiv meeting followed more than three hours of discussions between the US envoys and Putin. Witkoff described the discussions with Zelenskyy as meaningful, while Ukrainian officials said the talks covered possible security guarantees, air defence, energy support and a potential framework for future negotiations. Zelenskyy has indicated Ukraine is ready for further discussions, including a possible trilateral format involving Russia.
The diplomatic push comes amid continued fighting and deep disagreements over territory and security arrangements. Russia has maintained demands concerning occupied Ukrainian regions and NATO, while Kyiv has rejected terms it regards as unacceptable. The US envoys’ visits to both capitals nevertheless mark a renewed attempt to bring the two sides back towards negotiations.
