Chennai: PMK leader Anbumani Ramadoss has called for strict enforcement of the law banning smoking in public places, stressing the need for stronger action to protect people from the harmful effects of tobacco and passive smoking.
Anbumani said the existing restrictions should not remain merely on paper and urged the authorities to ensure that the ban is effectively implemented across public places. He has previously called for strict enforcement of anti-tobacco laws across Tamil Nadu, including action against violations.
He also stressed the need to protect non-smokers from exposure to tobacco smoke. The nationwide prohibition on smoking in public places came into force under the Prohibition of Smoking in Public Places Rules, 2008, framed under the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act.
Anbumani has been a prominent advocate of stronger tobacco-control measures since his tenure as Union Health Minister. In May this year, he also urged the Centre to consider banning cigarette sales to people born on or after January 1, 2009, with the aim of creating a smoke-free generation.
