Chennai:Ā Cyber fraudsters have cheated people of more than Rs 370 crore in Chennai so far this year, while the number of victims losing money is increasing day by day, Chennai Police Commissioner Amalraj said.
Speaking at an awareness programme organised by the Chennai Police Cyber Club and Anti-Narcotics Club at St Thomas College in Koyambedu, Amalraj said people were being lured into online scams by promises of easy and additional income. He urged the public, particularly students, to remain vigilant against cyber fraud.
The Commissioner also said 346 people had died in road accidents in Chennai so far this year, while 2,421 people had suffered injuries in various accidents. More than two lakh cases had been registered against motorists for riding without helmets. He appealed to students to follow traffic rules and promote road safety.
Amalraj further warned students about the dangers of drug abuse, saying 23 youngsters had died in the previous week after consuming painkiller tablets excessively as intoxicants. He said the police were taking legal action against drug sellers and urged students to stay away from drugs and help protect society.
