Chennai, Sept 10:
PhonePe and Visa have launched three new payment solutions — Tap to Pay, Cross Border Scan to Pay and Smart Accept — at the Global Fintech Fest 2026. The partnership makes PhonePe the first app in India to offer Visa’s cross-border QR payment capability.
With Tap to Pay, Android users can tokenise their Visa cards on PhonePe and make contactless payments at POS terminals without carrying the physical card. The service began its phased rollout on September 9. The Cross Border Scan to Pay facility will enable users to scan Visa-supported QR codes in 14 international markets, including Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Japan, China and South Korea.
Smart Accept will allow micro-merchants to accept card payments directly through their smartphones, eliminating the need for a separate POS machine. Customers can tap physical cards or tokenised mobile wallets on the merchant’s device. PhonePe said the facility will also integrate with its existing QR dashboard for reconciliation and dispute management.
The new services build on PhonePe’s Visa Device Tokenization facility launched in February 2025. PhonePe said it had more than 71.5 crore registered users and an acceptance network of over five crore merchants as of July 2026.
PhonePe Founder and CPTO Rahul Chari said the partnership would help establish a borderless and cardless payment ecosystem for Indian consumers and micro-merchants. Visa Group Country Manager for India and South Asia Suresh Sethi said the collaboration would make secure and frictionless commerce more accessible to Indians across borders.
