Chennai, Sept 11:
AMMK general secretary T.T.V. Dhinakaran has called for the opposition parties to field a common candidate, describing it as the right way to defeat what he termed the “Tughlaq regime”.
Dhinakaran said the present political situation called for unity among opposition parties and urged them to work together by setting aside individual differences.
He said the opposition should avoid splitting the anti-government vote and arrive at a consensus on a common candidate wherever necessary. Such an approach, he said, would send a strong political message against the ruling establishment.
Referring to the government’s functioning, Dhinakaran criticised the ruling dispensation and described it as a “Tughlaq regime”. He said the people were looking for an alternative and that opposition parties had a responsibility to provide one.
His remarks come at a time when political parties are stepping up preparations for the upcoming by-elections and beginning discussions on electoral strategies and alliances.
Dhinakaran maintained that broader opposition unity would be crucial and suggested that the parties should give priority to the larger political objective rather than their individual interests.
