Kathmandu, Sep 11:
The death toll from devastating flash floods in Nepal has risen to 1,377, while search and rescue operations continued for more than 5,000 people reported missing, authorities said on Thursday.
According to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority, 364 bodies have been recovered in Chitwan, 228 in Nawalparasi East, 222 in Nawalparasi West and 198 in Nuwakot. Bodies were also recovered from Rasuwa, Gorkha, Dhading and Tanahu districts.
Two victims died while undergoing treatment in Kathmandu, while the number of people reported missing stood at around 5,130. Authorities said 13,656 people had so far been rescued from flood-hit areas.
The floods were triggered by an ice-rock avalanche near the Nepal-Tibet border on August 26. The resulting waters from the Bhotekoshi River swept through towns and villages in northern and central Nepal, destroying homes, vehicles, roads and bridges and damaging hydropower projects.
The disaster also killed at least 43 people on the Chinese side, while more than 500 people were reported missing in Tibet, according to Chinese media reports.
