Thiruvarur, Sept 11:

Tamil Nadu Minister for Cooperation K A Sengottaiyan said the quantum of water released from the Mettur dam for irrigation was decided only after a departmental assessment of the available water and irrigation requirements.

Speaking to reporters at the Thiruvarur Collectorate, Sengottaiyan said the government would assess how much water available in the Mettur dam could be supplied for irrigation before taking further decisions on release.

He said there was a possibility of rain and floods in the coming days and the situation would be monitored accordingly.

On crop loans, the Minister said there would be no hindrance in providing fresh crop loans to farmers. The subsidy amount announced by Chief Minister Vijay towards crop loan waiver would soon reach the concerned cooperative societies, he said.

Sengottaiyan said the government wanted to ensure that the State’s financial assistance reached cooperative societies immediately. Earlier, after waiving cooperative society loans, funds were allocated over a period of five years depending on the availability of government finances. This system had now been changed, he said.
