Chennai, Sept 16:
Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay is set to launch the expansion of the State’s breakfast scheme on September 22, with the programme being extended to students of Classes 6 to 8.
The scheme, earlier known as the Chief Minister’s Breakfast Scheme, has been renamed the Perunthalaivar Kamarajar Breakfast Scheme by the TVK government. The expansion was originally scheduled to be launched on September 17, coinciding with the birth anniversary of former Chief Minister Periyar.
However, the launch was postponed as Chief Minister Vijay was in London to attract industrial investments. The new launch date has now been fixed for September 22, according to a communication sent by Social Welfare Department Secretary Pallavi Baldev to all district Collectors.
The programme will be implemented in government schools for students of Classes 6 to 8. However, the expansion will not be launched in Chengalpattu and Tiruppur districts for now as Assembly by-elections are being held in the respective districts.
The expansion is aimed at taking the free morning meal programme beyond primary school students and covering children in the middle-school classes as well.
