Chennai, Sept 16:
The electoral battle for the Madurantakam Assembly constituency has intensified with DMK and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) candidates filing their nomination papers for the October 6 by-election.
DMK candidate I Paranthamen filed his nomination papers on Tuesday, while his wife, M Prema, submitted her papers as the alternate candidate. Paranthamen’s affidavit showed that he had Rs 40,000 in cash, while his wife had Rs 25,000. He declared ownership of a Toyota Innova, 10 sovereigns of gold jewellery and one kg of silver.
TVK candidate K Maragatham Kumaravel, who had resigned as MLA of Madurantakam before joining the ruling party, also filed her nomination. According to her affidavit, she had Rs 50,000 in cash, three vehicles, including an Innova Crysta, and gold jewellery worth Rs 79.53 lakh. Her land and buildings were valued at Rs 86.40 lakh.
The nomination process has also gathered pace in Dharapuram, where DMK candidate Suganya, 34, filed her papers. The total number of nominations filed in Dharapuram had reached 20. TVK candidate P Sathyabama, AIADMK candidate Banu Mathi and candidates of Naam Tamilar Katchi and the Communist parties were expected to file their papers on Wednesday.
The Madurantakam and Dharapuram by-elections are scheduled for October 6, with the nominations process set to conclude on September 16. The constituencies fell vacant after the former AIADMK MLAs resigned and joined the TVK.
