A major disruption hit parts of the Dutch railway network early Tuesday, affecting thousands of passengers across central and eastern parts of the Netherlands and disrupting some services in the busy western region. The countryās rail infrastructure operator said it was treating the incident as possible sabotage.
Prorail spokesperson Joke van der Cruysen said disruptions were reported at 24 locations. Material was found at several sites and appeared to have been deliberately placed on railway tracks, she said. Police have launched an investigation into the incident and are examining both the cause of the disruption and those who may have been responsible.
There was no immediate indication of who was behind the suspected sabotage. The incident comes on a network used by hundreds of thousands of passengers every day, underlining the potential impact of deliberate interference with critical transport infrastructure. Authorities are expected to investigate whether the incidents at different locations were connected.
