Chennai, Sept 22:
PMK president Anbumani Ramadoss has urged the Tamil Nadu government to put pressure on Karnataka to prevent industrial effluents from entering the Thenpennai river and approach the Supreme Court seeking compensation for the pollution.
Anbumani’s demand follows a study by Chennai-based BioSynk which, according to the report cited by him, found dissolved oxygen in the water at Kelavarapalli dam near Hosur at only 0.1 mg per litre, against a normal level of 7-9 mg per litre. He also said phosphorus and nitrate levels were more than twice the permissible limits.
He said the low oxygen level was contributing to frequent fish deaths and expressed concern over the condition of the river. Anbumani also criticised the Karnataka and Tamil Nadu governments for failing to adequately address the issue despite directions from the Southern Bench of the National Green Tribunal on preventing the discharge of pollutants into the river.
