Chennai, Sept 22:
The investigation into the POCSO case involving Gem Granites owner R Veeramani is being widened to examine allegations that complaints were not acted upon and that attempts were made to suppress the matter, amid a political exchange between the ruling TVK and Left parties.
TVK Minister Rajmohan questioned the CPM over the alleged failure of the previous DMK government to act on POCSO complaints against Veeramani. CPM state secretary P Shanmugam, however, called for a comprehensive probe into complaints allegedly made during both the AIADMK and DMK regimes.
Shanmugam said a complaint was allegedly made in 2013, when J Jayalalithaa was Chief Minister, and another in 2025, when MK Stalin was Chief Minister. He said the investigation should examine the entire history of complaints and establish why action was not taken.
The CPM leader also said the investigation should not be restricted to Veeramani if evidence points to the involvement of others. He sought action against police personnel who received complaints, those who allegedly exerted pressure to prevent action and anyone found to have helped suppress the alleged offences. The government has indicated that officials found to have acted improperly would face action.
