Vatican City, Sept 23:
Pope Leo XIV is set to meet survivors of sexual abuse in France as criticism continues over the Catholic Church’s handling of abuse cases and demands for stronger action against those responsible.
The meeting is expected to provide an opportunity for survivors to speak directly with the Pope about their experiences and concerns regarding the Church’s response to abuse.
France has been at the centre of a major reckoning over sexual abuse within the Catholic Church following investigations that documented widespread abuse and institutional failures over several decades.
Survivors and advocacy groups have repeatedly demanded greater accountability, transparency and stronger measures to prevent abuse and protect children and vulnerable people.
Pope Leo XIV has faced calls to ensure that the Church responds more firmly to abuse allegations and that victims and survivors are given adequate support.
The meeting with French survivors is expected to be closely watched for any commitments by the Pope on accountability and safeguarding.
The Vatican has previously acknowledged the serious harm caused by sexual abuse within the Church and stressed the need for safeguarding measures. Critics, however, have continued to demand concrete action and greater transparency in dealing with abuse cases.
