Kyiv, Sept 23:
Russia and Ukraine exchanged deadly strikes as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy prepared for a meeting with US President Donald Trump, highlighting the continuing intensity of the war despite diplomatic efforts.
The latest attacks came as Zelenskyy was expected to meet Trump for discussions on the conflict and possible avenues towards ending the fighting. The Ukrainian President has continued to seek greater international support for his country and stronger security guarantees.
Russian and Ukrainian forces have continued to launch missile and drone attacks against targets on both sides, with civilian areas and critical infrastructure repeatedly affected during the conflict.
The strikes came against the backdrop of continuing diplomatic efforts involving the United States and European countries. Kyiv has been seeking support for its defence capabilities while also pressing for arrangements that would prevent a future escalation of the conflict.
The meeting between Zelenskyy and Trump was therefore being closely watched for indications of Washington’s approach to the war and the possibility of renewed diplomatic engagement.
Both sides continue to accuse the other of carrying out attacks against civilian areas. The competing claims could not immediately be independently verified.
