The Hague, Sept 25:
The International Criminal Court has convicted a former leader of the Seleka militia in the Central African Republic, finding him guilty of crimes committed during the country’s conflict.
The conviction followed proceedings concerning violence committed during the conflict in the Central African Republic. The case is part of the ICC’s broader efforts to prosecute individuals accused of serious international crimes.
The court has jurisdiction over genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes committed in situations falling within its mandate. Its proceedings have included cases involving conflicts in Africa and other parts of the world.
The latest conviction comes as international attention remains focused on accountability for alleged violations of international humanitarian law in several ongoing conflicts.
