Ahmedabad:
Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah on Sunday flagged off India’s first LNG-powered train from Sabarmati railway station in Gujarat, marking a move towards the use of alternative fuels in railway operations. The train uses a dual-fuel system involving diesel and liquefied natural gas (LNG).
The initiative is part of efforts to explore cleaner and more efficient fuel options for the rail network. The introduction of LNG-powered technology is expected to provide an alternative to conventional diesel-based operations while the Railways continues to examine new energy sources.
The development comes amid wider efforts to reduce the environmental impact of transport and diversify fuel use in the railway sector. India has also been exploring other alternative-fuel technologies, including hydrogen-powered trains.
