The October 6 bypolls in Dharapuram and Madurantakam have turned into a closely watched political exercise, with the ruling TVK, DMK, AIADMK, Left parties and NTK intensifying their campaigns. The vacancies arose after AIADMK MLAs P Sathyabama and K Maragatham Kumaravel resigned and joined the TVK, making the contests significant not only for the candidates but also for the political parties seeking to establish their positions after the Assembly elections. With 49 candidates in the fray across the two constituencies, voters are being presented with a multi-cornered contest.
The entry of the top leadership has added further intensity to the campaign. Chief Minister and TVK president C Joseph Vijay is campaigning for the party’s candidates, while DMK president M K Stalin, Udhayanidhi Stalin and other senior leaders are scheduled to address voters. AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami is also campaigning in both constituencies. The exchanges between the major parties have increasingly focused on the circumstances surrounding the resignations, the record of the government and broader political issues. Such rhetoric is an inevitable part of an election campaign, but the voters’ concerns at the constituency level — including local development, employment, public services and welfare — will also remain important.
With campaigning scheduled to end on October 4 and polling on October 6, the remaining days will see the parties make their final appeal to voters. The bypolls also provide an opportunity to assess how effectively each party’s campaign messages connect with the electorate in these two constituencies. Ultimately, the outcome will be decided by voters on polling day, while the counting scheduled for October 9 will provide the formal result.
