Kathmandu, Sept 30:
At least 27 people have been killed in rain-induced disasters across Nepal since September 24, authorities said on Tuesday.
The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority said 20 people were killed in landslides, four in floods and three in other incidents linked to heavy rainfall. Four people remain missing and eight have been injured.
The disasters have affected 1,082 families and killed 114 livestock. As many as 227 houses were completely destroyed and 142 partially damaged, while 31 bridges were also damaged. A total of 542 rain-related disaster incidents were reported between September 24 and Sunday.
More than 100 mm of rain was recorded at 186 stations across Nepal over the four days through September 27. The highest rainfall was recorded at Dedhgaun in Nawalparasi at 544.2 mm, followed by Panchase in Kaski at 500.2 mm and Atraulitaar in Tanahun at 472 mm.
Authorities said the heavy rainfall was associated with a low-pressure area near Uttar Pradesh in northern India and moisture-laden winds from the Bay of Bengal. The NDRRMA also sent flood-warning SMS alerts to more than 980,000 people.
