Lahore, Oct 24:
Pakistan’s Lahore was ranked the world’s most polluted city on Friday, with its Air Quality Index (AQI) reaching 410, a level classified as hazardous, according to air-quality monitoring platform IQAir. The reading highlighted the severity of the smog affecting the city and surrounding areas of Punjab province.
IQAir reported that the concentration of PM2.5 fine particulate matter in Lahore was 45.2 times higher than the World Health Organisation’s annual guideline value. These tiny particles, measuring 2.5 micrometres or less, can penetrate deep into the lungs and enter the bloodstream, potentially causing serious health problems, particularly with prolonged exposure.
Smog is a recurring problem in Lahore and other parts of Punjab, especially between October and February. Air pollution has emerged as a major public health and environmental concern in recent years, prompting repeated warnings from health experts and air-quality authorities.
Residents have been advised to avoid outdoor exercise during periods of severe pollution, keep windows closed to reduce the entry of polluted air, wear protective masks outdoors and use air purifiers indoors. The recurring episodes have also underscored the need for stronger pollution-control measures, effective monitoring and sustained efforts to reduce emissions.
