New Delhi, Oct 3:
The Election Commission has directed officials to facilitate the registration of eligible voters who were left out of the electoral rolls during the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise.
The move comes amid political opposition to the revision process, with Congress and other opposition parties alleging that large numbers of eligible voters have been removed from the rolls. The Election Commission has maintained that the exercise is intended to identify and remove duplicate, deceased and otherwise ineligible entries.
The Commission’s latest direction provides a route for people who believe they have been omitted to seek inclusion in the electoral rolls. The development comes ahead of protests planned by opposition parties and youth groups over the SIR exercise and the functioning of the poll panel.
The INDIA bloc has announced a protest at the Election Commission office on October 6, while the Cockroach Janta Party has launched a separate campaign demanding Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation.
