New Delhi, Oct 8:
The Supreme Court will examine an application seeking recall of its September 23 split verdict on a challenge to the 2023 law governing the appointment of the Chief Election Commissioner and Election Commissioners.
Chief Justice of India Surya Kant said the court would consider the plea, which has raised questions relating to the earlier proceedings concerning the appointment mechanism for members of the Election Commission.
The 2023 law provides the framework for selecting the Chief Election Commissioner and other Election Commissioners. The Supreme Courtās split verdict on the constitutional challenge has since become the subject of a plea seeking reconsideration.
The development comes amid a wider political debate over the independence and functioning of the Election Commission, with opposition parties separately protesting against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
