THANE:
A 32-year-old autorickshaw driver has been sentenced to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment by a court in Maharashtra’s Thane district for attempting to murder his estranged wife and stabbing a man who tried to rescue her.
Additional Sessions Judge V L Bhosale convicted Nazim Daud Khan under Sections 307 and 324 of the Indian Penal Code for the knife attack in November 2021. The assault left his wife, Rubina, with 40 per cent permanent disability in both hands.
According to the prosecution, the couple married in 2016 and have two sons. Khan allegedly abused his wife, who had moved to her parents’ house about eight months before the attack. On November 29, 2021, he went to his in-laws’ mattress workshop and asked her to return home. After she refused, he left but came back about half an hour later with a knife.
The prosecution said Khan chased his wife, sat on her chest and stabbed her repeatedly. When a worker, Mohammad Isak, intervened, he too was attacked. Passersby eventually overpowered Khan, while the injured woman was rushed to hospital.
The court sentenced him to 10 years’ rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 20,000 under Section 307. He was also given two years’ rigorous imprisonment and fined Rs 10,000 under Section 324. Both sentences will run concurrently. The court directed that Rs 20,000 from the fine be paid to the victim and Rs 5,000 to the eyewitness as compensation, besides recommending further compensation under the Maharashtra Victim Compensation Scheme.
