New Delhi, Oct 5:
India captain Shubman Gill has called for greater stability in the ODI squad after the team’s bowling weaknesses were exposed during the series against the West Indies, which India won 2-1.
India’s batting produced a wealth of runs during the series, with Gill, Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and KL Rahul contributing five centuries between them. However, the bowling unit struggled to provide the same consistency, particularly in the absence of Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya.
India used six different seam-bowling options across the three matches, with the group sharing only eight wickets. The problems were highlighted in the final ODI when West Indies successfully chased 352 — India’s highest total ever lost after posting it.
Gill said there was little time left for experimentation with the 2027 World Cup approaching. He also backed young pacers Anshul Kamboj and Auqib Nabi, saying both were likely to remain in the ODI mix and could develop into useful all-round options.
India’s next ODI assignment is against New Zealand, and Gill stressed the need to bring the first-choice players together regularly before the World Cup.
