Kolkata, Oct 6:
East Bengal produced a stunning attacking display to thrash NorthEast United FC 7-2 in the IFA Shield semifinal and set up a Kolkata derby final against Mohun Bagan.
NorthEast United took an early advantage, but East Bengal responded strongly and took control of the contest. Their seven-goal performance underlined the team’s attacking strength and secured a place in the final.
Mohun Bagan had earlier booked their place in the summit clash after a dramatic penalty shootout win over Punjab FC. Goalkeeper Vishal Kaith saved two penalties as the defending champions prevailed 4-3 in the shootout.
The final will therefore bring the two traditional Kolkata rivals together for another major domestic football contest, with both teams entering the match after contrasting but impressive semifinal performances.
