Chennai, October 8:
Tamil Nadu has recorded 21,655 dengue cases and 10 deaths between January 1 and October 7 this year, Health Minister Arunraj said on Thursday, adding that the government had intensified mosquito-control measures ahead of the northeast monsoon.
Speaking to reporters in Chennai, the minister said the Health and Local Administration departments were conducting preventive activities across the State to control the spread of dengue. Daily fever camps are being organised, with an average of around 1,000 people tested every day.
The minister said dengue cases in Chennai had gradually declined. However, with the northeast monsoon expected to begin, the government was taking additional precautions against a possible increase in infections.
Mosquito-control operations and public awareness campaigns are being carried out in different parts of Tamil Nadu. The authorities are also focusing on eliminating stagnant water, which serves as a breeding ground for mosquitoes.
The minister specifically warned construction sites to ensure that water did not stagnate in containers, pits and other areas. A fine of Rs 10,000 will be imposed for the first instance of water stagnation, while a higher penalty will be levied if the violation is repeated.
The government has urged residents, commercial establishments and construction companies to cooperate with preventive measures and ensure that their premises do not become mosquito-breeding sites.
The figures underline the continuing public health challenge posed by dengue, particularly as seasonal rainfall can create conditions favourable for mosquito breeding. Health officials are maintaining surveillance and conducting fever camps to identify cases and strengthen prevention efforts.
The governmentās immediate focus is on containing the spread through sustained mosquito-control activities, early detection and public participation as the State prepares for the monsoon season.
