Chennai, Oct 15:
The Tamil Nadu government is considering selling fine-quality rice at Rs 40 to Rs 50 per kg through cooperative stores to contain the impact of rising prices on consumers.
The proposal comes amid a sharp increase in retail rice prices, with some varieties reportedly selling for Rs 70 to Rs 80 per kg. Prices of pulses and cooking oil have also risen, adding to the burden on households.
According to a report, the government is exploring the procurement of fine-quality rice from the Food Corporation of India and other States to make it available at lower prices through cooperative outlets.
A price-monitoring committee meeting chaired by Food Minister Venkataramanan was held at the Secretariat on Tuesday to discuss measures to control the prices of essential commodities.
Officials are collecting details on rice availability in different States and the quantities that can be procured. The government is considering the scheme if the availability of one lakh tonnes of rice can be confirmed.
The proposal is aimed at improving access to rice at affordable prices amid concerns over rising market rates and supply shortages.
