Chennai, Oct 15:
Southern Railway has warned passengers against playing music, watching videos and reels, or playing games on mobile phones at high volume without headphones on trains and at railway stations.
According to a report, the warning follows complaints from passengers about disturbances caused by loud mobile phone usage. Jafar Ali, a member of the Southern Railway Users’ Advisory Committee, said such behaviour inconvenienced fellow passengers and affected their travel experience.
Under the amended provisions cited in the report, offenders could face a fine of up to Rs 1,000, imprisonment for up to six months, or both. Passengers who continue to cause disturbances despite warnings may face fines of up to Rs 5,000, the report said.
An order has reportedly been issued to railway divisions, authorising ticket inspectors and senior commercial officials to collect fines.
Passengers have been advised to use headphones or earphones while listening to music or watching videos and to keep their voices low while speaking on calls.
