Tirana, Oct 16
Clashes between police and student demonstrators erupted in Albania’s capital for a third consecutive day on Thursday as protests against the country’s long-governing Socialist government intensified.
Young demonstrators threw stones at a police cordon outside the Education Ministry in Tirana, prompting riot police to respond with tear gas and water cannons. Several protesters were detained as security forces attempted to disperse the crowds.
The latest clashes followed disturbances on Wednesday, when protesters attacked government buildings, banks and businesses. According to the Health Ministry, 89 people were injured in the violence, including 61 police officers.
The demonstrations have brought together student groups demanding reforms in the education sector and other protesters calling for broader political change. The participation of different groups has widened the scope of the agitation beyond university-related grievances.
The protests have placed fresh pressure on the Socialist government, which has been in power for an extended period. Demonstrators have accused the authorities of failing to address their concerns, while police have sought to prevent further damage to public and private property.
The situation remained tense in Tirana on Thursday, with authorities maintaining a security presence around government offices and other sensitive locations.
